Dairy Free Hot Chocolate

Hot Chocolate is a wonderfully cozy drink that almost always seems unhealthy and overly indulgent. Ditch the dairy, use coconut oil and milk, add rich, real chocolate, and that sentiment changes…until you get to sweetener. Using honey to sweeten cocoa is more natural, but sometimes adds an additional “honey” flavor. That’s why pairing the right honey with your flavors is so important. La Aurora Meadow Honey melds into the fruity richness of the chocolate and almost disappears; it makes the chocolate flavor more pronounced and deep, but doesn’t add a “honey” flavor to this sumptuous treat.

We’ve adapted Sarah’s recipe from Sarah’s Day Blog.

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup water
1/2 cup coconut milk
1/2 tsp coconut oil
1 Tbsp La Aurora honey
pinch of salt
8-10 squares of Green & Black Chocolate
small bits of chocolate for sprinkling

DIRECTIONS

Chop the chocolate. Add water, coconut milk, oil, honey, and salt to a milk pitcher. Begin to steam until the mixture is slightly warm. Add the chocolate pieces and continue to steam until the drink is hot and frothy and the chocolate is melted. Pour into a cup and sprinkle some chocolate bits on top. Serve hot and enjoy!

Alternatively, if you do not have a steam wand, combine all the ingredients except for the chocolate in a small sauce pan. Slowly heat until warm, then add the chocolate. Continue to heat slowly, stirring constantly, until the chocolate is melted. To froth and ensure the coconut oil doesn’t float on top, blend in a high-speed blender or with a emulsion blender for 10 seconds or so until frothy.
